Understanding Ripstop Fabric Workwear

When you are looking for a new uniform for your company or new workwear for your employees, identifying the right fabric type is just as important as selecting the right size and colour. With so many different kinds of fabric available, it can be hard to know what's best for your team's needs.

Ripstop fabric is starting to become extremely popular in the workwear industry, but many people don’t know what exactly it is, and how it works.

WHAT IS “RIPSTOP”?

Ripstop material is a woven fabric that uses a special reinforcing technique to make it resistant to tearing and ripping, preventing them from spreading beyond the first interwoven square (hence the term “ripstop”)

During the weaving process, some reinforcement yarns are woven in a crosshatch pattern to give the fabric the appearance it has. This makes the workwear more functional and tough, and also makes it a visually striking fabric.

Lots of specialised garments such as work pants, work shirts, jumpers & hoodies and hats are made of ripstop materials. From military equipment to uniforms, ripstop helps preserve the integrity of clothing.

In the above illustration, the thicker yarn (depicted in blue) serves as a reinforcing thread that gives much higher tensile strength than the threads on the typical fabric weave. These threads increase the fabric’s tear-propagation resistance strength.
