Roll Down Earplugs
Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss with Roll Down Earplugs
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common occupational hazards, yet it is largely preventable. The most effective ways to prevent NIHL are to eliminate the source of the noise or reduce it through engineering controls, such as sound barriers or equipment modifications. However, in many workplaces, these methods are not feasible. In such cases, workers need high-quality hearing protection, such as noise-cancelling earplugs, to reduce the amount of noise reaching their ears.
Roll down earplugs, also known as foam earplugs, are inserted directly into the ear canal and expand to form a secure seal. They come in a variety of forms, including premoulded, mouldable, push-to-fit, and custom-moulded designs, offering solutions for different noise levels, comfort preferences, and work environments.
When to Use Roll Down Earplugs
To determine the need for hearing protection, workplaces should conduct noise-level testing using sound meters. These devices measure the noise generated by machinery or in specific work areas. The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations) set a noise exposure standard of 85 dB(A) averaged over an 8-hour workday, with a peak noise limit of 140 dB(C) at the employee’s ear position.
When administrative or engineering controls fail to reduce noise to safe levels, personal protective equipment (PPE) like roll-down earplugs should be provided and worn consistently to protect workers’ hearing.
What Makes a Comfortable Roll Down Earplug
Comfort is one of the most important factors in choosing hearing protection. The effectiveness of an earplug depends not only on its noise reduction rating but also on whether workers can wear it comfortably for long periods. At Southland, we offer a wide range of noise-cancelling earplugs designed for comfort and reliability in every situation. From disposable roll-down earplugs to reusable push-in foam and pre-moulded designs, our selection ensures protection without sacrificing comfort.
How to Correctly Insert Earplugs
Disposable Roll-Down Earplugs:
-
Roll the entire plug into a narrow cylinder.
-
Reach over your head with your free hand and pull your ear up and back.
-
Insert the earplug so the foam tip is fully inside the canal.
-
Hold in place for 30 to 40 seconds until it has fully expanded.
Reusable Push-In Foam Earplugs:
-
Hold the stem in one hand.
-
Pull your ear up and back with your free hand.
-
Insert the foam tip fully into the canal.
-
Use a gentle rocking motion to ensure a deep, comfortable fit.
Reusable Pre-Moulded Push-In Earplugs:
-
Hold the stem in one hand.
-
Pull your ear up and back with your free hand.
-
Insert so all flanges are well inside the canal, ensuring a snug fit.
Correct insertion is critical — even high-quality earplugs will not provide adequate protection if they are not fitted properly.
