How to clean safety glasses

If you wear any type of eyeglasses, you probably know how irritating it is to have dirt, grit, or grease stuck on the lenses. Not only is it annoying, but dirty lenses can also cause eye strain and headaches.

Safety glasses must be cleaned with extra care to prevent any kind of damage to their lenses. Due to the nature of the environments, they are used in, safety glasses may also be exposed to hazardous materials such as bacteria, which could get into your eyes and cause irritation or infection. Therefore, cleaning safety glasses regularly is important.

How to Clean Safety Glasses?

While cleaning safety glasses, you have to take care that no scratches or streaks appear on them. Here are some effective ways of cleaning.

  • Inspect your safety glasses for any dirt or dust.
  • After inspection, dust off any dirt or debris by gently blowing any particles off before wiping the lenses of your safety glasses with a microfiber cloth to avoid scratching.
  • Soak them in water before applying a cleaning fluid spray. Take an eyeglass cleaning tissue or towelettes and wipe the lens inside and out.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush to clean the frames and make sure to only apply a little pressure, to avoid scratching the lens.
  • Rinse them using lukewarm water to clear off the remaining debris and dust from the frames and lenses.
  • To dry the lenses, use a microfiber cloth. You can also use a microfiber bag to clean the lenses.
  • Finally, if you have a case, put the glasses in that after every use. You can also attach a neck cord or retention strap to hang them easily on your neck when not in use. It’s important to remember not to put unprotected safety eyewear in your pocket.

What should you not do?

  • Do not use a shop rag, paper towel, your shirt, or facial tissues to wipe your safety glasses. Regular cloth contains fibers that can scratch the lens of your safety glasses.
  • Do not overuse your safety glasses. Once the lenses are scratched it is time to replace them.
  • Do not clean them using bleach or alcohol. Polycarbonate will react to these substances and will break down over time.
  • Do not put your safety glasses down on the lenses, always on the frames.

Following the above cleaning do’s and don’ts will keep your safety eyewear clean, and not only extend the life of eyewear, which saves money but can also improve overall visibility and keep small foreign objects out of your eyes.
