Staying Safe in the Sun while in the Workplace

Exposure to the sun is a serious workplace hazard that is often underestimated. Both ultraviolet (UV) radiation and heat from too much exposure to the sun can cause serious health issues for anyone working outside. This includes skin cancer, heat stress and a range of eye conditions.

Research shows that exposure to the sun causes more cases of cancer each year than exposure to asbestos, diesel engine exhaust fumes and crystalline silica combined. This is because there are many workers exposed to the sun, they tend to be exposed to very high levels, and they are generally not well protected.

To protect yourself from solar UV:

1. Wear protective clothing

Clothing is one of the most effective protective barriers because it absorbs or blocks most UV radiation. It is important for the protective clothing to cover as much skin as possible.  If possible, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts and ensure the clothing is rated 50+ UPF.

2. Use sunscreen

Sunscreen should be a minimum of SPF 30 or above and preferably water-resistant. It should also cover all bases, protecting against harmful UV-A and UV-B rays as well as the artificial UV-C rays created by industrial processes such as welding.

3. Wear a hat

Hats, especially wide brim hats are able to help in covering places that are difficult to apply sunscreen, including the scalp and ears. A wide brim hat also provides additional protection for the face and neck.

4. Wear sunglasses

Protective sunglasses shield your eyes from UV rays that can cause eye problems such as cataracts. Look for a pair that says it blocks 99% or 100% of UVB and UVA rays. Although some contact lenses also offer UV protection, they should be worn in combination with sunglasses in order to maximise protection.

5. Take breaks from being in direct sunlight

Even if you are properly protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays, the heat from the sun can still be dangerous, and can cause heat stroke, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Taking a break and drinking water, or even better, specially formulated hydration drinks such as Thorzt will help you to re-energise and recover.

The most effective way for employers to help protect their employees from too much exposure to the sun is to provide the necessary protective clothing and accessories. To see a complete range of protective wear and other personal safety equipment, see our website at https://www.southland.com.au/
